Prof. Frank Biermann

Principal Investigator
Frank Biermann is a research professor of Global Sustainability Governance with the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. He is the director of the GLOBALGOALS research programme on the steering effects of the Sustainable Development Goals, supported by a European Research Council ‘Advanced Grant’; the founder of the Earth System Governance research alliance, a global transdisciplinary research network; and the editor-in-chief of Earth System Governance, a new peer-reviewed journal with Elsevier.

Before joining Utrecht University in December 2015 for a research-oriented professorship, Biermann was with VU University Amsterdam as head of the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis (2003-2015), a group that was evaluated at the end of his term as being ‘world leading’ and ‘one of the highest profile academic research groups involved with sustainability governance from around the world’. Between 2007-2014, Biermann also served as director of the Netherlands Research School of Socio-economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment, which was evaluated in 2014 as a ‘network of excellence’. Other earlier fulltime or visiting affiliations include Free University of Berlin, German Advisory Council on Global Change, Harvard University, Humboldt University of Berlin, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Lund University, University of Maryland at College Park, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Social Science Research Centre Berlin, Stanford University, and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). Prof. Biermann is involved in both the BSc Global Sustainability Science and MSc Sustainable Development.
